Hensenville Chaper 1.8

Now that the house was “empty” she could actually explore it. The du Blanc home was huge. She called it empty because the du Blanc’s had gone to work. There were a handful of house staff milling about their chores, but other than that she could safely snoop around her new employer’s home.
She started downstairs; most of the staff was in the kitchen, when Nikita walked in the conversation stopped.
“Lemme guess: Taking bets on how long the new girl would last?”
Everyone looked guiltily away from Nikita. Put me down for eight months.” Nikita said smiling.
An older woman started laughing then poured two shots of vodka. “Here kid.” She held out a shot towards Nikita.
“Drinking on the clock? Is that wise?” she asked walking over and taking the shot.
“Wise, probably not. Cheers.” They downed their shots, “But necessary to survive the day when you work at la maison de du Blanc. You’re her new assistant right? Don’t ever let her see you sweat. She’ll use it against you and make your life a living hell. She’ll hate you for your looks and youth.”
“Why are you telling me all this?”
“Because if you plan on running around the house and the streets of Hensenville with Mrs. Margaret du Blanc for the next eight months of your life then you’re gonna need as much advice as you can get.” She laughed.
“Nikita.”
“Constance.”
“So tell me, why did the other girls quit?”
